The Fourth of July weekend is here and whether you’re planning a barbecue at a park, the beach or in your own backyard, don’t forget the sunblock. Sunblock is a major factor in protecting you from getting skin cancer from sun exposure.  According to The Skin Cancer Foundation, “more than 90 percent of all skin cancers are caused by sun exposure and sunscreens are a key weapon in the arsenal against the disease.” 
So, here are some of the answers to what people want to know about sunblock.
 
What makes the sun harmful?
 
There are two types of ultraviolet (UV) radiation that the sun emits.  They are UVA and UVB rays.  UVB rays are the rays that cause sunburn.  UVA rays penetrate the skin more deeply and cause long-term damage, such as wrinkling, leathering, sagging, and other effects of aging.
 
What is the UV Index?
 
The UV Index provides a forecast for the risk of overexposure to the sun.  Knowing the UV Index gives you an idea about the dangers of overexposure to the sun when you are working or playing outside.  It is calculated on a daily basis by the National Weather Service and the Environmental Protection Agency.  The measurement is based on the clouds and local conditions that will affect the amount of UV rays to hit the ground. 
 
It ranges from zero to 10+.  Zero implies a low risk of overexposure to the UV rays of the sun and 10+ is a very high risk of overexposure.  For the average person, a UV Index of 3 to 5 is a moderate risk of overexposure to the sun
 
How can we protect ourselves from the harmful effects of sun?
 
o Limit your exposure to direct sun, i.e., spend time in the shade.
o Wear protective clothing if you’ll be in the sun for along periods of time, especially, a wide brim hat.
o Whether you’re in the direct sun or in the shade, use sunblock with a SPF of 15 or higher.
What is SPF?
 
SPF is an acronym for Sun Protection Factor.  It is laboratory measurement of a sunscreen’s ability to filter the UVB rays to prevent sunburn.  The higher the SPF, the more protection it provides against the sun.  In other words, if you burn in eight minutes and you use a sunblock with a SPF of 10, it will take you 80 minutes to burn.  If you use SPF 15, it will take 120 minutes for you to burn. 
 
In reality, the protection provided depends on several factors:  The person’s skin type, the amount applied and the frequency of application, activities that are engaged in while the product is on, and amount of sunscreen that is absorbed into the skin.
 
How should you apply sunblock?
 
Frequently and liberally!  Despite the fact that it adds hours on to the time it takes for a person to burn, it is best to apply it at least every two hours.  Apply it more frequently, if you are swimming or sweating.  It should also be applied liberally one ounce per use.  Therefore, if you buy an 8 ounce bottle, it should only last for 8 uses.
 
Which is the best number to get?
 
Anything above SPF 15 is best.  SPF 15 will filter out 92 percent of the UVB rays, SPF 30 will filter out 97 percent of the rays and SPF 50 will filter out about 98 percent. 
 
Whatever number you get, remember to apply it frequently and liberally!
 
What is the best kind to get? 
 
It does not have to the most expensive one on the shelf to be the most effective.  You should look for ones that filter the UVA and UVB rays.  Look for ones that are waterproof or sweatproof.  Needless to say, take waterproof and sweatproof with a grain of salt.  If you go swimming for more than a quick dip and you’re sweating more than a droplet on your forehead, it’s not enough to apply it once.  If you go swimming, apply it again when you come out of the water.  If you’re sweating, apply it more frequently.
 
Are there clothes that have SPF?
 
A regular white T-shirt has an SPF of 3.  There are clothes that are made with zinc oxide and can provide an SPF of 30.  Tighter knit clothing also provides some protection.  Always try to wear a wide-brim hat to give more protection too. 
 
Am I protected from the UV rays in the shade?
 
The shade does provide some protection but the UV rays of the sun can reflect off the water, sand, concrete, and snow (not usually a problem in the summer!) and then penetrate the skin.  So sitting in the shade does provide good protection, but you still need to apply sunscreen.
 
And remember, whether you’re walking on the beach or just sitting on the porch reading a book, it’s always a good idea to have a bottle of sunblock close by. It’s a key factor in reducing your risk of developing skin cancer.

MEXICO CITY-Sewage-filled lagoons at a pig farm in eastern Mexico - a product of the North American free trade deal - are suspected of creating ground zero conditions for swine flu in this country.
Environmentalists argue lax regulations in the factory farming that boomed in Mexico right after the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and the U.S. are making people sick - and not just with swine flu.
You might call this the NAFTA flu, said Rick Arnold, co-ordinator of Common Frontiers, a Canadian coalition focusing on Latin America and issues of economic integration.
He argues multinationals are getting away with dire conditions not allowed north of the border.
Environmental groups three years ago began protesting against operations at the Carroll Farms in Veracruz, jointly operated by U.S. pork giant Smithfield Farms.
The first confirmed case of swine flu originated with a 5-year-old boy from the town of La Gloria, near the farm. He recovered.
Medical officials have not pinpointed where the outbreak began.
And from its Virginia headquarters, Smithfield officials insist there is no evidence linking their operations to the disease.
Smithfield Farms, the worlds largest pork producer with $12 billion in annual sales, opened Carroll Farms in 1994, calling it a joint venture.
At home, the company was fined $12.6 million (U.S.) in 1997 after the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency disclosed it was dumping raw pig sewage into a river flowing into Chesapeake Bay.
The health ministry, which earlier said 168 people were believed killed by swine flu in Mexico, yesterday would confirm only 12 of those deaths as being from swine flu and would not say how many more cases were suspected.
The air in Mexico City, once called the most polluted by the World Health Organization, is loaded with human fecal matter, gases, dust and other toxic materials.
The pollution affects our eyes, throats and lungs, said Dr. Erendira Gallardo Lobera, a general practitioner. She said the Mexican government should take stronger measures to ensure residents of the capital arent breathing in rat and dog feces with their oxygen.
While Mexicans continue to wear masks and stay indoors in a country virtually shut down, people say the government should be more forthcoming with information.
I think the government isnt giving us the correct statistics about infected cases, said restaurant employee Jose Gutierrez Hernandez. I fear theres not enough medicine to control this outbreak and there is no vaccine against swine flu.
President Felipe Calderon promised his officials would provide timely information, adding as a parent and as a person, there is nothing more important to me than the life and health of the Mexican people.
From the Mexican embassy in Ottawa, spokesperson Alberto Lozano Merino said Mexican authorities are not concerned with pig farm operations near the suspected epicentre of the swine flu outbreak. Authorities acted quickly to send Veracruz samples to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Ga., and have followed every regulation and protocol.
However, the Veracruz newspaper La Marcha, as well as the Mexico City daily, La Jornada, reported widespread cases of people falling ill near the pig farm in March.
Several local groups argue the farms should be closed pending extensive environmental and health reviews of an operation that raises 950,000 pigs a year and doesnt have a sewage treatment plant.

I had a QEEG test on my brain in State College, PA in late 2007. A QEEG test stands for a quantitative EEG of the brain. Interpretation: The elevation of Beta and Gamma frequencies in the eyes closed state is most likely related to his reported insomnia and pattern of obsessive worry and ruminating thoughts. The observation that this area increases in fast wave activity when the eyes are closed indicates that when he tries to relax a paradoxical effect takes place that results in increased arousal of cognitive activity associated with emotional hypervigilance and awareness of danger. Individuals with this pattern often experience high levels of anxiety and panic states which correspond to his symptoms that he is reporting. The increase in Gamma activity in the central and left frontal areas is likely related to patterns of physical pain. It is likely that his nervous system has how to stand down and that he operates with chronic fatigue as the result of sleep deprivation.
Finding # 2   He shows an elevation in Theta wave activity in the occipital and right temporal areas. This finding is seen in all three conditions but is most significant when he attempts to read.
Interpretation: This finding unquestionably relates to his visual processing problems. The acute presentation of this symptom and the focal nature of the EEG pattern suggests this is related to some specific toxic exposure with local impact or a traumatic event. This high level of focal theta may also be related to his balance problems since the occipital area can reflect activity originating in the cerebellum which is responsible for balance and equilibrium.
Finding #3   A pattern of suppressed power in the occipital area is present across all frequencies. This deficit is noted using Laplacian montage which adjusts for artifacts in electrical recording found in other statistical programs. This deficit in absolute power is very evident in the eyes closed and eyes open conditions but is somewhat attenuated but still present in the reading condition.
Interpretation: The suppression in electrical energy in the occipital region relative to a normal population is consistent with a toxic reaction or metabolic disorder that is centralized in the visual processing area of the brain. In the absence of any other systemic illness in his history the likely cause for this toxic reaction is the Levaquin exposure.
The fact that theta wave activity also increases in the occipital area when attempting to read suggests that although he attempts to mobilize energy to read, his brain is not able to produce a functional state that supports this goal. In other words when attempting to read his brain attempts to marshall energy for this task but ends up producing a pattern of electrical activity associated with dysfunction. Findings # 2 and # 3 should therefore be seen as supporting the hypothesis of significant impairment on both a functional and metabolic level to the occipital region of the brain and potentially to the cerebellum as well.
The constellation of factors found in his record suggest that he is similar in his QEEG profile to those individuals who have difficulty learning and retaining new information. Given the nature of his symptoms and his successful premorbid adjustment it is likely that his similarity to a learning impaired population is related to his Levaquin exposure.
That is pretty much the bulk of what my QEEG test showed. It took me a ton of time to type this up. I could have typed this so much faster pre-Levaquin. It is very hard to find a practioner to do a QEEG test. These are  not considered standardized tests. Many doctors are not even familiar with these tests. I only had one done because I was told that there is a high probability that they will show damage since some other quinolone victims have had them done and they have showed damage. I needed some sort of documentation for social security disability purposes. It is hard to accept that I have so much damage to my brain.  The doctor suggested neurofeedback as a potential treatment option. If anybody is interested in having a QEEG test done it is best to probably QEEG or quantitative EEG test and the town or city and the state you live in to find practitioners that do these brain mapping tests. The test was painless. It mainly consisted of various electrodes strapped to my brain. The results are then generated into some sort of computer software brain mapping program. Here's a purely hypothetical scenario. Let's say you were a dedicated imperial militarist who believed that your country's security, prestige and financial interests could best be served by war and the ever-present threat of war. Let's say you had some really hot and juicy operations going on, endless deadly conflicts that were pouring hundreds of billions of dollars into your war machine and entrenching national policy even more deeply in the militarist philosophy – the machtpolitik – that you believe in.

But there's a problem. The general public – the cow-like herd out there that doesn't understand grand strategy the way you and your fellow elites do – is growing weary, and wary, of your Long War. The national treasury is bankrupt, the national infrastructure is rotting, the nation's communities are dying; millions of people are out of work, losing their homes, losing their dreams, spiraling down into want, privation and despair. Yet you have big plans to escalate the war, expand your war machine, and maintain the global dominance that you believe is the right and natural role for your special nation – and its elites. What to do? How to galvanize the truculent, self-absorbed herd into enthusiastically supporting your vital agenda once more?

Well, here's one purely hypothetical approach you might try. You goad and provoke violent extremist groups into retaliating against your attacks, your civilian-slaughtering invasions and incursions into their territory. Being unable to confront directly your war machine – the largest, most advanced military force in the history of the world, sustained by a tsunami of public money that each year surpasses the military spending of the rest of the world – they naturally respond with "asymmetrical" operations. At first, these are directed at nearby targets: your supply lines, the forces of your local proxies and allies, and other chaos-inducing depredations in the groups' own regions, designed to foul the lines of your control and drive you out. Just as naturally, you use these attacks to justify an even greater military presence in their regions. The cycle inevitably, inexorably ratchets upwards and outwards, until at last the extremists strike at your homeland – either with your connivance, or your covert acquiescence, or, in any event, with your foreknowledge that such an attack was sure to come. This is the moment you have waited for; this is exactly what you wanted. Now you can whip the herd back into a martial frenzy, keep the Long War going, and push aside the rabble's petty, small-minded desires for a peaceful, prosperous life at home, minding their own business.

One never knows exactly what goes on behind the imperial drapery in the Potomac palaces, of course; ordinary American citizens were long ago turned into Kremlinologists of their own government, trying to discern -- through ceremonial signs, backstairs gossip, and slight deviations in ritualized rhetoric -- just what their masters are really up to.
