Reflecting these concerns about breast cancer, Representatives Debbie Wasserman-Schultz and Henry Waxman have introduced bills promoting educational campaigns, including teaching regular breast self examination to high school students. However, and in spite of its scientifically proven efficacy, this initiative has been strongly challenged by breast cancer prevention who remain unaware of the scientific evidence on the cancer risks of high dose radiation premenopausal mammography. Furthermore, these are unaware of the well-documented scientific evidence of avoidable causes of breast cancer, other than factors related to . . . childbirth and breastfeeding.
It is now beyond dispute in the independent scientific community that environmental and occupational exposures to carcinogens are the primary cause of non-smoking related cancers. An October 2007 publication on environmental and occupational causes of cancer by one of us (Dr. Richard Clapp) further emphasized that the increasing incidence of cancer is due to preventable exposures to carcinogens in the workplace and environment.
The Clapp report provides a wide range of evidence showing preventable cancers resulting from environmental exposures to formaldehyde, chlorinated organic pesticides, and organic solvents, among other substances.
Dr. Clapp cites a wealth of evidence attributing the increasing incidence of lung cancers to preventable occupational exposures to asbestos, silica, chromium VI, formaldehyde, methylene chloride, benzene, and ethylene oxide.
The National Cancer Institute is the primary federal agency devoted exclusively to fighting cancer. Paradoxically, the escalating incidence of cancer over the last thirty years parallels its sharply escalating annual budget from $690 million in 1975 to $6 billion this year. Of this a mere $131 million is allocated to NCIs mission on Prevention and Early Detection. Furthermore, President Obama has proposed a 5% increase in funding the NCI for unspecified cancer research, with a doubling to $11.5 billion over the next eight years.
However, in spite of well-documented evidence relating the escalating incidence of cancer to a wide range of avoidable carcinogenic exposures, the NCI remains asleep at the wheel, and has stubbornly refused to devote significant resources or even attention to prevention.
The NCI has also ignored proddings from Congress and independent scientific experts to develop a comprehensive registry of carcinogens. Worse still, the NCI has misled the public by claiming that most cancers are due to unhealthy behavior, blaming the victim, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
NCI officials still claim, for instance that 94% of all cancers are due to unhealthy behavior such as smoking, poor nutrition, inactivity, obesity and over exposure to sunlight – and that a mere 6% are attributable to exposures to environmental and occupational exposures.
These estimates are based on those published in 1981 by the late U.K. epidemiologist Sir Richard Doll. However, from 1976 to 1999, Doll had been a closet consultant to U.K. and U.S. industries, including General Motors, Monsanto and the asbestos industry. Following revelation of these conflicts of interest, just prior to his death in 2002, Doll admitted that most cancers, other than those related to smoking and hormones, are induced by exposure to chemicals often environmental.
Furthermore, the NCI has touted the imminent success of new cancer treatments – promises that have seldom borne out, and which have been widely questioned by the independent scientific community. For instance, in 2004, Nobel Laureate Leland Hartwell, President of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Control Center, warned that Congress and the public are paying NCI $4.7 billion a year, most of which is spent on promoting ineffective drugs for terminal disease.
As members of the independent scientific community, we welcome the Obama Administrations goal of health care reform and prevention. But while President Obama has put forward a unique cancer plan, it focuses far too much on the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, rather than on prevention.
The simple truth is that the more cancer is prevented, the less there is to treat. That will also save lives and money.
Congress now has an epochal opportunity to reform our health care system and prevent diseases, particularly cancer, from occurring in the first place. By taking some simple steps, Congress should enact reforms to prevent cancer.

A little late for Mother's Day . . .
The girl cousins on my mother's side of the family love fiber - knitting, sewing, quilting. We love to touch the yarn and fabrics, we love to create things, and we probably came by this trait naturally. Diane is a knitter. Julie is also a knitter who has dabbled a little into quilting. I can knit, but not well. But I love to sew, although I rarely make any garments anymore. I just quilt.
My mother (Jane) loved sewing and passed that love to me. She was an expert seamstress. During WWII she worked in garment factories. Later in life she sewed most of my clothes, and made quilts, curtains, and a lot more. She didn't like to make fancy pieced quilts with handquilting. But she loved to "use it up" and "make due" by putting together blocks or strips into functional warm quilts and she hand tied them all.
Two of my mother's 3 younger sisters also had a love for fiber. June was a knitter and Lois had her own successful business making draperies and slipcovers. Both could sew garments expertly as well, even though they usually chose not to.
They all probably inherited this love of fiber from their mother. My grandmother could knit, crochet, and tat lace. She also did quite a bit of fancy embroidery. But her knitting is probably one of the things her grandchildren remember the most. I don't imagine anyone could even guess how many sweaters, scarves, mittens, socks she made for friends and family over the years. A beautiful white crocheted table cloth won a ribbon at the Minnesota State Fair sometime in the 1960's. I still have that table cloth. And I have the red angora sweater she made for me to wear for my high school graduation photos. Not that it still fits!!!
Another generation has the fiber bug. My younger daughter Laura has become a knitter - thanks to lessons from cousin Julie a couple of summers ago. My older daughter Jerilyn loves to scrapbook and run, but maybe she'll be bitten by the fiber bug later in life. Who knows?
My grandmother passed away in her 90's nearly 25 years ago. My mother died the summer of 1991. But the love of fiber still exists. Thanks Mom ( Grandma the aunts) for passing it along to the next generations!.

Long story short very good friend has stage 4 breast cancer that has spread to her bones, liver, and brain. Here is my problem she is disgustingly optimistic. I am upset and want to be upset but fell like I cant because she is acting like she is going to beat this even with a poor prognosis. I was optimistic when she first got diagnosed but the prognosis was much better it has spread and they are, by their words, just maintaining it not making it go away. Chances are that is wont go away and it is even better that she wont be around to much longer. She is taking trips and sort of doing the bucket list thing. I just want to be upset I want to cry with her and just be mad and angry and sad at it but I feel like I cant because she is not. What do I do

You join a support group or go to a counselor or find another friend to cry to. And then you allow your friend to continue acting/behaving the way she is. This is about her illness, and her death, not your emotions about her death. Go out and have fun with her, since that seems to be how she wants to spend the rest of her life. If you were dieing, wouldnt you rather spend more time being happy rather than sobbing over something that you have no way of changing?
In all likelihood, she probably is sad and upset and angry too. Or, maybe she has just decided that she is ready to die and it isnt worth it to spend the rest of her time upset. Perhaps during a private time you could mention that you are upset, or ask her to talk about how she feels. Its possible that maybe she just hasnt been ready to break down and cry and by angry yet.

If you are looking to buy a hip new handbag, you may have looked at many different types. You are probably looking at a designer bag and wishing that you could afford to buy a bag like that. Unfortunately, you simply cannot rationalize spending thousands of dollars on a handbag. If this is the case, you do not need to sacrifice the great design and look of a designer handbag to save money. You can look for a designer inspired handbag instead.
What Is A Designer Inspired Handbag?
A designer inspired handbag is not a discount designer handbag. A discount designer handbag is a real designer handbag that is simply discounted. However, a designer inspired handbag is not the same. A designer inspired handbag is a cheaper handbag that usually looks like a more expensive designer bag that is out there. Today there are tons of different designer inspired handbags out there. Different discount stores like Target and Sears offer handbags that look very much like designer handbags. These are the purses that were inspired by original designer bags.
Why Buy Inspired Instead Of Real?
A real designer handbag is going to be very expensive. If you purchase a real designer handbag, you will be spending hundreds or thousands of dollars. Will you really feel comfortable taking out a handbag that cost you thousands of dollars? If you buy a designer inspired handbag that looks just as good as a designer handbag, you will normally spend less than a hundred dollars. You will be able to feel quite comfortable taking out your handbag. If you lose it or if it gets something dirty on it, you will only be out a hundred or less dollars. If you take out a designer handbag, you will be more worried about keeping your purse clean and protected than having a good time.
Buying Your Purse
When you chose your own designer inspired handbag, make sure that you find something that fits with your personality and your own style. It can be quite fun to liven up your wardrobe with a red or purple purse. However, if you need your purse to be a little less out there, you could always choose a more standard purse like a black or brown designer inspired handbag. Remember, even if you need something for work that is not as out there, you can still get yourself a nice, fun, color popping designer inspired handbag for when you are not at work! So whatever you buy, make sure that it suits your style.

One of the last things you'll do to your quilt is sew on binding to cover up its outer edges. By the time that task rolls around you're often tired and just want to get it over with so that you can move on to the next project. Take a deep breath--and don't get in so much of a hurry to finish that you slap the binding on in any old way, because it's not difficult at all to make binding strips from any fabric you choose and sew them to the quilt with sleek, mitered corners.

Most breast cancers do not cause any specific symptoms, so it is difficult for a woman to reliably distinguish a benign lump from a cancer.  But there are a few symptoms that may suggest breast cancer. You can read more about the symptoms of breast cancer here.
Benign tumours are not life threatening, grow slowly and do not invade other parts of the body.
A Malignant tumour is harmful, grows quickly and may spread to other parts of the anatomy. When malignant cells spread to other parts of the body they form Secondary tumours, these tumours are known as Metastatic tumours.
How do cancerous cells impact on the role of healthy body cells?
The organs and tissues of the human body consist of a variety of different cells. These cells are essentially the buiding blocks of the human body. The health of a human body is dependant upon cell growth and renewal. The vast majority of human cells need to to replaced regularly. Under normal circumstances these healthy cells grow, divide and die. The growth and control of these cells is defined by cell growth genes. If a change occurs in these control genes a previously healthy cell now becomes an unhealthy tumour cell. As well as the change in the physical characteristics of the cell there is also a change in their behaviour. They grow rapidly, divide and form more cancerous cells.
Breast cancer causes
It is not known for certain what causes breast cancer. There are however certain ‘risk factors’ that would make one particular women more likely to develop the cancer than another. This does not mean however that breast cancer is inevitable, it mean that the risks of developing it are greater. You can read more about breast cancer causes here.
Breast Cancer Types
There are different breast cancer types and the spread or progression of each type of  breast cancer is classified into breast cancer stages. You can find out more about the different breast cancer type here and the different breast cancer stages here.

Wyoming Valley is a traditional patchwork quilt block that falls into the category of you can assemble me in loads of ways. Look at the illustration and it's easy to see that the black patches are diamonds. They can be cut and assembled as diamonds, but another option is to orient half square triangles so that they flow together to create the same shape. Or, you can mimic the diamonds by sewing a pair of stacked Flying Geese units. The pattern includes instructions for two of those methods. A hefty percentage of quilt blocks offer similar construction options, and that means nearly every design can be constructed in a beginner-friendly (or speed-friendly) manner. Get familiar with quilt block bone structure and you'll see that it's easy to spot units that can be altered to suit your needs.

25 Breast Cancer Myths and Misunderstandings
Here's what you need to know about treatment and prevention.

1. Myth: Only women with a family history of breast cancer are at risk.
Reality: Roughly 70 percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no identifiable risk factors for the disease. But the family-history risks are these: If a first-degree relative (a parent, sibling, or child) has had or has breast cancer, your risk of developing the disease approximately doubles. Having two first-degree relatives with the disease increases your risk even more.

2. Myth: Wearing an underwire bra increases your risk of getting breast cancer.
Reality: Claims that underwire bras compress the lymphatic system of the breast, causing toxins to accumulate and cause breast cancer, have been widely debunked as unscientific. The consensus is that neither the type of bra you wear nor the tightness of your underwear or other clothing has any connection to breast cancer risk.

3. Myth: Most breast lumps are cancerous.
Reality: Roughly 80 percent of lumps in women's breasts are caused by benign (noncancerous) changes, cysts, or other conditions. Doctors encourage women to report any changes at all, however, because catching breast cancer early is so beneficial. Your doctor may recommend a mammogram, ultrasound, or biopsy to determine whether a lump is cancerous.

4. Myth: Exposing a tumor to air during surgery causes cancer to spread.
Reality: Surgery doesn't cause breast cancer and it doesn't cause breast cancer to spread, as far as scientists can tell from the research so far. Your doctor may find out during surgery that your cancer is more widespread than previously thought, however. And some animal studies have shown that removing the primary tumor sometimes enables metastatic cancers to grow, but only temporarily; this has not been demonstrated in humans.

5. Myth: Breast implants can raise your cancer risk.
Reality: Women with breast implants are at no greater risk of getting breast cancer, according to research. Standard mammograms don't always work as well on these women, though, so additional X-rays are sometimes needed to more fully examine breast tissue.

6. Myth: All women have a 1-in-8 chance of getting breast cancer.
Reality: Your risk increases as you get older. A woman's chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer is about 1 in 233 when she's in her 30s and rises to 1 in 8 by the time she's reached 85.

7. Myth: Wearing antiperspirant increases your risk of getting breast cancer.
Reality: The American Cancer Society pooh-poohs this rumor, but admits that more research is needed. One small study did stumble on traces of parabens in a tiny sample of breast cancer tumors. Parabens, used as preservatives in some antiperspirants, have weak estrogen-like properties, but the study in question made no cause-and-effect connection between parabens and breast cancer, nor did it conclusively identify the source of the parabens found in tumors.

8. Myth: Small-breasted women have less chance of getting breast cancer.
Reality: There's no connection between the size of your breasts and your risk of getting breast cancer. Very large breasts may be harder to examine than small breasts, with clinical breast examsand even mammograms and MRIsmore difficult to conduct. But all women, regardless of breast size, should commit to routine screenings and checkups.

9. Myth: Breast cancer always comes in the form of a lump.
Reality: A lump may indicate breast cancer (or one of many benign breast conditions), but women should also be on the alert for other kinds of changes that may be signs of cancer. These include swelling; skin irritation or dimpling; breast or nipple pain; nipple retraction (turning inward); redness, scaliness, or thickening of the nipple or breast skin; or a discharge other than breast milk. Breast cancer can also spread to underarm lymph nodes and cause swelling there before a tumor in the breast is large enough to be felt. On the other hand, a mammogram may pick up breast cancer that has no outward symptoms at all. Women with a rare type of breast cancer called inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) rarely have a breast lump. Symptoms of IBC include swelling, redness, itchiness, or warmth in the breast; tenderness or pain; a change in the nipple, such as retraction; skin that appears thick and pitted like an orange peel or with ridges and small bumps; an area of the breast that looks bruised; or swollen lymph nodes under the arm. Doctors encourage women to report any changes that they notice in their breasts.

10. Myth: You can't get breast cancer after a mastectomy.
Reality: Some women do get breast cancer after a mastectomy, sometimes at the site of the scar. Or the original cancer may have spread. For women at high risk of breast cancer who have their breasts removed as a prophylactic or preventive measure, there's still a chance, though a small one, that they can get breast cancer. After prophylactic mastectomy a woman's risk for developing breast cancer is reduced by an average of 90 percent.

11. Myth: Your father's family history of breast cancer doesn't affect your risk as much as your mother's.
Reality: Your father's family history of breast cancer is just as important as your mother's in understanding your risk. But to find out about the risk stemming from your father's side of the family, you need to look primarily at the women; while men do get breast cancer, women are more vulnerable to it. Associated cancers in men (such as early-onset prostate or colon cancer) on either side are also important to factor in when doing a full family-tree risk assessment.

12. Myth: Caffeine causes breast cancer.
Reality: No causal connection has been found between drinking caffeine and getting breast cancer; in fact, some research suggests that caffeine may actually lower your risk. So far it's inconclusive whether breast soreness may be linked to caffeine.

13. Myth: If you're at risk for breast cancer, there's little you can do but watch for the signs.
Reality: There's a lot that women can do to lower their risk, including losing weight if they're obese, getting regular exercise, lowering or eliminating alcohol consumption, being rigorous about examining their own breasts, and having regular clinical exams and mammograms. Quitting smoking wouldn't hurt either. Some high-risk women also choose to have a prophylactic mastectomy to decrease their risk by roughly 90 percent. They can take other proactive steps such as having regular MRIs, exploring chemoprevention with treatments such as tamoxifen, and participating in clinical trials. The important thing to do if you think you might be at high risk is to talk to an expert who can evaluate your situation and discuss your options. High-risk women's clinics and preventive-care programs are great places to start.

14. Myth: Women with lumpy breasts (also known as fibrocystic breast changes) have a higher risk of developing breast cancer.
Reality: In the past, women with lumpy, dense, or fibrocystic breasts were believed to be at higher risk of getting breast cancer, but there doesn't appear to be a connection after all. However, when you have lumpy breasts, it can be trickier to differentiate normal tissue from cancerous tissue, so you may experience false alarms. Women with fibrocystic breasts often follow up their mammograms with an ultrasound.

15. Myth: Annual mammograms expose you to so much radiation that they increase your risk of cancer.
Reality: While it's true that radiation is used in mammography, the amount is so small that any associated risks are tiny when compared to the huge preventive benefits reaped from the test. Mammograms can detect lumps well before they can be felt or otherwise noticed, and the earlier that lumps are caught, the better one's chances for survival. The American Cancer Society recommends that all women age 40 and older receive a screening mammogram every year.

16. Myth: Needle biopsies can disturb cancer cells and cause them to spread to other parts of the body.
Reality: There's no conclusive evidence for this claim. Despite some previous concerns, a 2004 study found no increased spread of cancer among patients undergoing needle biopsies compared to those who did not have the procedure.

17. Myth: After heart disease, breast cancer is the nation's leading killer of women.
Reality: Breast cancer kills roughly 40,000 women a year in the United States but stroke (96,000 deaths), lung cancer (71,000), and chronic lower respiratory disease (67,000) are each responsible for more deaths annually.

18. Myth: If your mammography report is negative, there is nothing else to worry about.
Reality: Despite their importance for breast cancer screening and diagnosis, mammograms fail to detect around 10 percent to 20 percent of breast cancers. This is why clinical breast exams and, to some extent, breast self-exams are crucial pieces of the screening process.

19. Myth: Hair straighteners cause breast cancer in African-American women.
Reality: A large 2007 study funded by the National Cancer Institute found no increase in breast cancer risk due to the use of hair straighteners or relaxers. Study participants included African-American women who had used straighteners seven or more times a year for 20 years or longer.

20. Myth: Removing the entire breast gives you a better chance of surviving cancer than having a lumpectomy with radiation therapy.
Reality: Survival rates are about the same for women who have mastectomies and for women who choose the breast-conserving option of removing only part of the breast and following the surgery with radiation treatments. However, there are some casessuch as with extensive DCIS disease, the presence of
CA gene mutations, or particularly large tumorswhen lumpectomy and radiation may not be an appropriate treatment option.

21. Myth: Overweight women have the same breast cancer risk as other women.
Reality: Being overweight or obese does increase your breast cancer riskespecially if you're past menopause and/or you gained the weight later in life.

22. Myth: Fertility treatments increase the risk of getting breast cancer.
Reality: Given estrogen's connection to breast cancer, fertility treatments have come under suspicionmost recently when Elizabeth Edwards's breast cancer recurred. (She'd previously had fertility treatments.) But several studies have found that these prospective moms are likely to have no higher risk of breast cancer. As yet, no large, long-term, randomized studies have eliminated this concern entirely; it merits more research to find a definite answer.

23. Myth: Living near power lines can cause breast cancer.
Reality: A 2003 study aimed at explaining what appeared to be a high incidence of breast cancer in certain counties on Long Island, N.Y., found no link between the disease and electromagnetic fields emitted by power lines. An earlier study conducted in the Seattle area yielded a similar conclusion. Research into potential environmental risk factors is ongoing.

24. Myth: Having an abortion raises your risk of getting breast cancer.
Reality: Because abortion is believed to disrupt hormone cycles during pregnancy and breast cancer is linked to hormone levels, numerous studies have investigated a causal linkbut found no conclusive evidence for one.

25. Myth: Breast cancer is preventable.
Reality: Alas, no. Although it is possible to identify risk factors (such as family history and inherited gene mutations) and make lifestyle changes that can lower your risk (reducing or eliminating alcohol consumption, losing weight, getting regular exercise and screenings, and quitting smoking), roughly 70 percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no identifiable risk factors, meaning that the disease occurs largely by chance and according to as-yet-unexplained factors. It's crucial, however, to get regular breast exams and mammograms and always consult with your doctor whenever you notice any changes in your breasts. When identified and caught early enough, breast cancer is treatable and very often beatable.

AFP - Tuesday, March 24

WASHINGTON (AFP) - - People who eat more red or processed meat have a higher risk of death from all causes including cancer, while a higher consumption of white meat reduces such risks, a decade-long US study released Monday found.

The joint study begun in 1995 by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and seniors group AARP followed more than half a million men and women between age 50 and 71, who filled out a food frequency questionnaire estimating their intake of red and processed meats as well as white meats such as pork, chicken and turkey.

Over the study period, 47,976 men and 23,276 women died. The one fifth of men and women who ate the most red meat -- a median of 62.5 grams per 1,000 calories per day -- had a higher mortality rate than the one fifth who consumed the least -- 9.8 grams per thousand calories, according to the report.

A similar rate held true for consumers of processed meat.

Comparatively, the top fifth of white meat consumers had a slightly lower risk for death than those who ate the least white meat.

"For overall mortality, 11 percent of deaths in men and 16 percent of deaths in women could be prevented if people decreased their red meat consumption to the level of intake in the first quintile," wrote the authors led by Rashmi Sinha of NIH's National Cancer Institute.

"The impact on cardiovascular disease mortality was an 11 percent decrease in men and a 21 percent decrease in women if the red meat consumption was decreased to the amount consumed by individuals in the first quintile."

Cancer-causing compounds are know to form during high-temperature cooking of meat, the report stated, and meat is a major source of saturated fat, which has been linked to certain cancers.

Lower meat consumption has been linked to reductions in risk factors for heart disease, including lower cholesterol levels and blood pressure.

"These results complement the recommendations by the American Institute for Cancer Research and the World Cancer Research Fund to reduce red and processed meat intake to decrease cancer incidence," the authors wrote.

"Hi friends,

This may seem like a funny email but I was so surprised by what I discovered I had to share it with you.

When I think of the job situation in this country, I can't help but think this helps in some small way.
I don't know how many households there are in the U.S. But if these were the only things we bought think of the impact....

(She wrote:)
This past weekend I was at Kroger. I needed 60 W light bulbs and Bounce dryer sheets. I was in the light bulb aisle and right next to the GE brand I normally buy was an off brand labeled "Everyday Value." I picked up both types of bulbs and compared the stats - they were the same except for the price. The GE bulbs were more money than the Everyday Value brand but the thing that surprised me the most was the fact that GE was made in MEXICO and the Everyday Value brand was made in - get ready for this - the USA .

So throw out the myth that you cannot find products you use every day that are made right here - from a company in Cleveland OH !

So on to another aisle - Bounce Dryer Sheets....yep you guessed it Bounce was more money and made in Canada, the Everyday Value brand was less money and MADE IN THE USA! I did laundry yesterday and the dryer sheets performed just like the Bounce Free I have been using for years and at almost half the price!

So my challenge to you is to start reading the labels when you shop for everyday things and see what you can find that is made in the USA - the job you save may be your own or your neighbors!

If you accept the challenge, pass this on to others in your address book so we can all start buying American, one light bulb at a time!

Besides, you might save a little green in the process.

Stop buying from China ..........

We should have awakened a decade ago......

Lets get with the program.... Help our fellow Americans keep their jobs ... And create more jobs here in the U.S.A.

The most common strain of bacteria found in dental plaque may cause blood clots that can escape into the bloodstream. He remembered handing the salesman a check for his entire savings and the salesman giving him the owners manual with all the required specs so the car could achieve the highest level of performance. This causes an increased risk for heart attacks and strokes.

If you notice a bleeding gum that is often red and irritated, or if you've noticed that your breath is bad, you may have a gum infection.

According to the American Academy of Periodontology, there are several theories that explain the link between periodontal and heart disease. He pulled up close to the air and water station. One theory is that oral bacteria can affect the heart when they enter the blood stream, attaching to fatty plaques in the coronary arteries (heart blood vessels) and contributing to clot formation. After he opened the locking gas cap he began to fill the tank with the water hose, he decided the 50 cents for the water was better than the $4.oo a gallon for gas."

Seems rather absurd, doesn't it?

That is why it is so very hard for me to understand why there is even a controversy over health and fast food consumption having negative effects. Coronary artery disease is characterized by a thickening of the walls of the coronary arteries. If you look at your bodies requirements for the highest quality of life you can achieve and you understand that everything you consume is where all of these required elements come from, then it is very easy to understand if you want optimum health, then and only then, will you fully understand the real reasons fast food consumption has such negative effects upon your body.

Your health is a direct reflection of the daily choices you make about your diet, nutrition and fitness. Blood clots can obstruct normal blood flow, restricting the amount of nutrients and oxygen required for the heart to function properly. Many people are now turning to holistic healing, natural remedies and alternative medicine to help them achieve their optimum level of health. This may lead to heart attacks.

In fact, periodontal disease may increase your risk for other health concerns including a weakened immune system, diabetes, stroke, lung and respiratory disease, preterm, osteoporosis and even low birth babies. These practices rely heavily on functional medicine, where the underlying cause is diagnosed and treated instead of the symptoms.

Because it is easier and much more effective to prevent than to cure for optimum health, you must examine your diet and make sure you are getting the proper nutrition along with a consistent fitness program.

The water you drink is the most important element to achieve optimum health. Some of these are threatening to life.

How do people know if they have periodontal gum disease? When you brush your teeth, your gums bleed. It should be as pure as possible and structured. And are swollen, red and tender. Your body is over 75% water and your brain is approximately 80% water. Other signs are when permanent teeth become loose or separate. The mid afternoon lull that most people feel is dehydration. And if you have persistent bad breath. You should drink water instead of sugar or caffeinated drinks, which only provide a temporary "pick me up.

With the amount of toxins in food, water and air today you must choose organic food as often as you can. People with periodontal disease have an infection that causes chronic inflammation of the gums. Almost 80% of toxins come from meat and dairy, so if you must consume these always choose organic. This is a path for these bacteria to enter the bloodstream.

Many other diseases have early warning signs, but gum disease often progresses without pain and silently. Vegetables and fruits should be peeled if they are not organic or washed with a tsp. More than half of all people over 18 have at least the early stages of periodontal disease, and the numbers increase to three out of four people who are over 35. of vinegar in a gallon of purified water. The worse part is that it not only destroys the gum surrounding your teeth, but the supporting bone that holds your teeth in place. Some vegetables and fruits like cucumbers and melons pull the toxins in, so your best choice is organic.

Until recently your choices for good health and fast food consumption were mostly negative. If there are pockets or spaces between your gums and teeth, your dentist may suggest a course of treatment that will help stop further damage to your gums and bones.

One Beverly Hills dentist recommends periodontal disease treatment that includes regular appointments with your dental team to make sure there's no plaque build-up. Even though many fast food restaurants now carry salads and healthier food choices, there is still a huge health risk and fast food consumption in a very negative way, because normally only one item that is ordered is healthy to accompany other very unhealthy over processed choices. You should also attack plaque on a daily basis by using a one-step powered tooth brush.

The Swedish Dental Journal says that it helps remove plaque bacteria twice as fast as a regular tooth brush.

Yes it is that time again. Breast checks for February due today. It is really important that you do this at least once a month. Best at the same time of the month - so you get to really know your breast and their inners. I have very lumpy breast so I find this a challenge. But with these regular checks I am familiar with them - I will know when a lump is not good. Don't forget to check the areas surrounding your breasts. This way you will know when something does not feel the same. Breast cancer does not always come in a sphere shape (a friend of mine made me feels hers - it felt just like a thicker long muscle going from her breast to under her arm pit) so it is important you know when something is different.

For ideas on how to check your breast look here.

Breast cancer occurs commonly in women of all ages and can be scary thought. Based on the laboratory credentials, some manufacturers have chosen to use an independent photonics lab that is well respected internationally in their field and is known to be very comprehensive in their test results.  The facility created disciplined parameters for UV testing based more on the future interests of the industry.  However, this method is also a much more expensive testing process.

The method employed by textile manufacturers seeking UV ratings for "woven yarns" is perhaps the one that is more incorrectly but commonly used today – and the test protocol is measured for stretch type fabrics used mainly for swim and active-wear.  As leno fabric is a woven, with various degrees of porosity, such tests can still produce erratic results, especially with ventilated weaves and if the dyeing process involves optical brighteners and/or titanium dioxides in the pigments. In most cases the one breast is removed to prevent the spread of the cancer into other areas of the body. These variables can wreak havoc on accurate results.

What can create controversy with the new fabrics?

As with any consumer goods purchase involving new and evolving technologies, one must be careful in relying on poorly researched magazine or newspaper articles, which can be quite misleading. There are many ways of finding out if you are at risk of getting breast cancer especially if it runs in your family. Be sure to read the product detail descriptions on clothing tags or, if purchasing on-line, the description of a product on the web site. There are two genes that are associated with keeping the breast tissue and cells functioning normally, and if you are worried you can ask for a test to be done to determine whether or not there are abnormalities which can increase your risk of developing breast cancer at some stage in your life. If a product does not say, for example, that it offers up to a 97% block, one should not assume that it does, even if other items within that product line so say so on the tag or in the on-line product description. Men can develop breast cancer but is very rare.

As with most cancers, breast cancer does occur in stages and this will determine the type of treatment that is prescribed.

Do colors affect the UV protection level?

Yes, color is also an important point when considering clothing for the purpose of sun-block: Darker colors (especially indigo, navy and black) perform better because they can absorb more UV; however the trade-off is that they can create heat as a by-product. The early stages of the cancer are 0, 1 and 2 where the cancer is still small and can be treated easily with very little chance of spreading to other areas. Lighter colors will reflect more, especially fabrics with optical brighteners. The later stages of breast cancer are stages 2, 3A and 3B if many lymph nodes are involved and the final and advanced stage is stage 5.

Breast cancer has become a worldwide unifying force and now there are support centers, forums, where you can speak to other woman about your fears and thoughts. All everyday existing fabrics can be considered to have a sun-protective value, but unlike the creams that can have lower values, the current UPF rating system begins at the minimum UPF level of 15 to permit an independent classification.

When the ASTM D13.65 committee was created for the addendum to sun-protective fabrics in 1996, a number of textile manufacturers and light and laser specialists invested about 5 years in planning the testing protocol. There is breast cancer awareness month where everyone can wear a pink ribbon to show their support. Even today, it is still a work in progress and will be updated annually because the results are still inconclusive and merit more study. It is advised that all woman get regular mammograms to minimize their risk and catch any signs early on. Naturally, some of the unique textiles being created today are, under current lab conditions, misunderstood.

What exactly is done in-lab to obtain a UPF rating? Is it different from "SPF"?

Yes, UPF involves a different criterion. You can even give yourself a mammogram to check for any lumps that are not normal. While still a work in progress, the UPF [ultraviolet protection factor] is based on an entirely different curriculum of testing methods than the "SPF" measurements used for creams.

Breast cancer can be treated using Chemotherapy, Radiology, Surgery and Hormone treatment or there are newer treatments which are a Sentinel lymph node biopsy and then surgery or High dose chemotherapy with a transplant of stem cells, and lastly monoclonal antibodies which are used with another traditional form of treatment. For reasons of economy, the new rating system will use an invitro (lab) technique only, and includes wash, stretch and abrasion testing controls - as textiles are generally static in nature and do not change over time.

During the later stages of breast cancer the affected breast can be inflamed and very red and swollen, which is because the cancer cells are blocking the vessels.

However while consistent in protocol, standard control testing methods may not yield similar results from lab to lab.  While it is currently the most cost effective method to determine UPF, the test method will not recognize a textile with an averaged number less than UPF 15: for example, even if the fabric might test average a "19", this number is always rounded down by 5 digits, in this case - rendering a "14" . To lower your risk, make sure that you get checked regularly and find out if cancer of the breast or even ovarian cancer runs in your family. Because of the minimum UPF level of 15, mentioned above, this result will render say a "19" to become a "0".

When I saw her again, I couldnt help but think about how I would do her surgery differently today. I am at a different point on the learning curve than I was then, so I have tried not to be too harsh on myself. Still, I would have used a superior-medial pedicle. That simple change would have (most likely) kept her from this visit. Superior-medial pedicles rarely if ever bottom out.
Another thing I would have done differently is the incision/scar. I used the Wisepattern and she has an anchor-shaped (or inverted T) scar with a periareolar circle. She has a long (looong) inframammary scar. Today, even when I do need to use the Wise pattern incision, I can often half the length of that inframammary scar. Today, I do many more using just the vertical scar and periareolar circle so there is no inframammary scar. That technique has really only become popular and accepted as safe in the last 10 years.
I cant go back and do over her surgery from the very beginning with my knowledge and skills of today. Fortunately (and I do feel blessed that she understands that), she doesn't blame or fault me. It is me doing the soul searching and wishing I could go back.
The best I can do for her is correcting the bottoming out which I find easy to do. I just wish there were no need for it.

To correct the bottoming out, I mark (as can be seen in the photos above) the true inframammary crease. I measure 6-7 cm from the nipple and plan a wide elliptical excision of the inframammary scar. In this womans case, the old scar fell near the center of the ellipse. I then excise skin only, do a minimal undermining superiorly, reshape the breast tissue with some heavy vicryl sutures, and then close the incision. Here are some post-procedure photos.

It is that time of year for The Party. That means gifts, party clothes and socializing. Not to sound like a big old Scrooge, but spare me the forced party this year. Whether that is the official work party or the fund raising party sponsored by a business colleague, lets not kid ourselves, they are not usually fun.
The work party; wouldnt you rather go home early and get paid for the whole day? The money spent on the per person amounts to that and you know, because you have worked on the party committee in the past!
The fund raising party, it would be easier to just give a donation.

If a gift exchange is involved:
Try to find out who has your name ahead of time.
Pray for no Secret Santa!
For some reason many people think menopausal women want chocolate, but in truth a good gift suggestion is dish towels, followed by pot holders.
Try to get the word out that you dont want wine, chocolates, soaps, lotions, candles, food or books but DO want Dish Towels.
I know some of you are saying; what is wrong with pampering products or food and alcohol items and for the love of God why not books? Let me explain. Do you really want a tower of chocolates, or soap that smells like chocolate, some bad wine or a book written about chocolate?
Once again let me suggest, Dish Towels!
If your gift exchange is the swap number affair, you bought your own dish towels.
If you are a re-gifter, this is not good advice. Re-gifters love the tower, wine and soaps, etc. They have a party to go to that is not work related and now you have bought their present. Again; I say Dish Towels.

For the menopausal woman, you know the party rules:
Dont drink too much if at all.
Dont wear high heels because you will be standing and chatting for the first hour.
Dont tell anyone how you really feel about them even if THEY are drunk.
Dont complain about anything.
Dont talk about religion, politics or sex.
Smile and be gracious to everyone wishing them Happy Holidays.
Thank everyone for being such a good: manager, boss, co-worker, assistant, etc.
Look at peoples pictures with a nodding smile.
Leave as soon as possible with-out calling attention to yourself.
Ho Ho Ho.
