I just had an anxiety attack. I get them every now and again (I was diagnosed when I was young with O.C.D but now I have more like anxiety) I hate those and I want to know is there a way to calm myself down? I get mini attacks when its over.
I teach skydiving and so I need to manage this in my students from time to time. Here are the things that I find, work very well for just about everyone;
1. Close eyes and imagine you are walking into a very safe place (this part should be practiced before hand ideally). A nice sunny glade in a kindly inviting forest usually works well. Its best if you can sit down and maybe even lie down. Start to use positive words (affirmations) to convince your mind that you are feeling more calm (it works).
2. Deep breathing will start to slow down your heart rate. This is the way to do it. Take a BIG deep breath through your nose and hold it, then breath in a little MORE so you really FILL your lungs. Then as slowly as you can (say, over 6-8 seconds) breath out through your mouth. Do this only twice and your heart rate will have started to slow down. A few minutes later you can do it again, but too often may make you feel light headed.
3. A drop or two of Rescue Remedy on your tongue will surely help. Its homeopathic and available over the counter at your Pharmacist.
4. Only if you are hyper-ventilating, breath into a paper bag.
5. Later/afterward, get some training on Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). When you do it youll recognize the points Ive mentioned above and youll learn to do them even better. Gradually youll take more and more control of your attacks and life will feel better.

She had few friends and mingled in public places as little as possible. For millions of South Africans, every day is a struggle with debilitating social anxiety. Anxiety is a universal human trait. We have all had the experience of feeling shy, anxious and self-conscious whether giving a speech, eating in front of other people or asking the object of your affection out on a date.
When this self-consciousness becomes so intense that a person starts avoiding situations which provoke it, and when the persons social and/or occupational functioning becomes impaired because of this, it crosses the line from normal anxiety to Social Anxiety disorder.
Internet
In this age of technology, people are dealing more and more with ATMs, answering machines and e-mail, and less and less with actual people. We push buttons instead of shaking hands. It is argued that this techno-culture breeds Social Anxiety disorder by denying people the essential practice needed to develop social skills. However this same techno-culture may also provide help with the problem in the form of the Internet.
Sally discovered the joy of chatting online when her boyfriend installed a PC in their study at home two years ago. "Having been in cognitive-behavioural therapy and on medication for a year already, I was managing better, but still struggling with the practicalities of interacting socially" Sally states. She smiles wryly as she adds, "Ive always been socially inept". "I have had few friends because I havent known where to begin to start making them" she adds. "My self esteem was dangerously low back then and my lack of friends was only feeding into this" she recounts.
Chatting
Sally then started chatting online. "I found that I could practice certain skills in a very non-threatening environment. I honed my conversational skills, engaged in light conversation, and most of all realised that I am a likeable person. I gained the courage to start using some of the skills I had learnt in real-life settings". She adds "I still chat online and I have formed some meaningful Internet friendships. My social functioning and my self esteem have improved a lot".
Sallys account represents a success story in support of one side of a very controversial argument. A debate is raging at the moment among health care professionals as to the effects of technology, and the Internet in particular, on our psychological wellbeing. Many people who experience severe anxiety in public may feel quite comfortable expressing themselves in cyberspace.
Stepping stone to real world interaction or place to hide?
Both, says Rick Heimberg Ph.D., director of the Social Anxiety disorder programme at Temple University. Heimberg states that online interaction can be positive if it encourages a socially phobic person to become more extroverted in real-world settings. In contrast, however, it can be negative if excessive time on the Internet replaces face-to-face contact, he says.
Sherry Turkle, a Clinical Psychologist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, extols the virtues of using the internet to "draw-out" socially phobic people. She states that "people use the Internet to put one toe in the water and try out social contacts with which they are less comfortable in the ".
Dangers
Dr Marcia Slattery, a psychiatrist at the Mayo Clinic highlights the potential dangers involved. She states that "some people I have seen clinically, have become for lack of a better word - with staying online". She warns against allowing the Internet to become ones social network in and of itself, to the neglect of real-time relationships.
She adds "It is best to allow yourself to reap the benefits of having a social connection on the net and then generalise the experience in person-to-person contact".
The issue is a controversial one, and it seems to depend not on the technology itself, but on how this technology is utilised. The professionals differ in their relative enthusiasm for the Internet as a therapeutic tool, but they do unanimously agree on one thing, it seems.
That one thing is that chatting on the Internet needs to be kept in perspective and must not be allowed to eclipse face-to-face interactions. When asked for some useful advice, Sally offered this: "The Internet can be a wonderful and a terrible thing, depending on how you use it. Chatting can be great in bolstering your confidence, and in learning social skills, but these things are only valuable in so far as you incorporate them into your real life".

Evolution comes into play, because you automatically have a fight-or-flight system built into our brains. The foods we eat, amount we exercise, and sleep we get every night all play roles into how our brain functions.
Lastly, anxiety disorders may develop due to stress. When you are stressed about something, you may find that you slow start to wear out. While our bodies are built to handle certain amounts of stress, over time, this simply breaks down and we give in to anxiety, which can develop into an anxiety disorder. No matter what the reason, however, it is simply important that you ask for help dealing with your condition.

Yes, I tried Cognitive Behavior Therapy and it DOES work. I am not completely over my anxiety, but the negative thoughts that consumed my mind have dimished. I think more postively now. I am in therapy at my school now and I wanna try group therapy soon. If you are in college then I highly suggest you look up info about their counseling center and go in and make an appointment. The therapy costs are included into my tuition, so I dont pay anything! As for the Cognitive Therapy, I did that all on my own. I listened to a 20 step audio series by a gur named Dr. Richards. I honestly think that I can stop my anxiety by not obsessing over it. I think that when I go to websites and try to look for cures it only makes it worse. Trying to find a way to beat it makes it worse. If I just let it go, will it stop? And how would I go about doing this? Medication is shit, by the way. It doesnt solve anything, it just helps with some symptoms.
well I think it just depends on how bad your anxiety is, I have been diagnosed with a anxiety disorder since I was about 17 and I could never do it without my medication I have taken ativan 2mg tid which means 3 times a day and Ive been on that for what 20 yrs now and it is something I feel like I have to take, if I had diabetes or high blood pressure I would take medicine for that, I was so bad that when they came on I would be paralyzed with fear just ruining my life I couldnt live and I just had terrible panic attacks so I take my medication as prescribed I dont misuse it but Ive tried to go off and it just didnt work so I dont think its so terrible taking medication now there are doctors who do love to over medicate and I think going to therapy and doing other things with the medication is why its helped me so much a pill all by itself isnt the best answer, it would be the same as if I had bad cholesterol took a pill but didnt change my diet ya know? So you have to do whats right for you, only you can make that decision, but pills arent terrible things when used correctly, they saved my life actually, so good luck and you can talk to me anytime you want ok.

I am going to try not to write a book..
I have a 12 year old son, after many battles of not medicating we are now using meds. It works a little, however he is so moody and up and down. Has anyone been on an adhd med and on an anxiety med? If so, did it work?
Please no comments on the way - i have been down this road for 10 years and it didnt work.
Please don’t put your children on Adderall, I’m 19 and i’ve been treated with psychostimulant since I was 7 years of age. Not only do amphetamine based medications have a much higher abuse rate and more adverse side effects, in my opinion they do not work as well compared to the Methylphenidate medications.
Ritalin is a much safer treatment to start on, not the slow release of course.
This is coming from a person who has been treated with every pill known to man, I graduated in the top 5% out of 190 students in my year level. My father also grew up with ADHD.
All behavioural medication will cause mood swings. The coming down usually starts with feelings of irritability, very abrupt when asked a question, short tempered and almost no tolerance when something annoys them. This can take 30 or more minutes to pass.
Towards the end of the coming down, there is a brief period of withdrawal, they may appear very gloomy, best to just leave them alone until it passes. Then you are back to the hypo kid.
Tell me if I’m wrong about the coming down, I’m trying to remember from my childhood, there are slight variations in the different meds.
Now, the ride up, from when you first give them the tablets. Feel free to question my next statement, its rather hard to try and describe what its like at that age.
Behavioural meds are meant to calm your kids down, right?
The meds raise awareness, give the ability to maintain high levels of focus, and maintain a level of concentration by lowering impulsiveness. If I’m relaxing in front of the television and i take my medication, i am filled with an urge to do something, you feel compelled, motivated, all of a sudden your senses have just exploded into a state of optimal focus, from nothing.
What would a boy of 12 do with every single nerve impulse in his brain firing away, in a state intended for learning or performing tasks that demand absolute focus.
His brain is all fired up, with nothing to do.
It’s hard to get a picture across, or a description in any sense of what this feels like at his age.
Everything in his body is set to go, he has never felt this sensation, and more importantly what does he do with a mind stuck in overload for 2 hours?
What I’m trying to get at is, this “Anxiety” is the medication.
“why am I feeling like this, what am i suppose to do, what do i do”
He needs to learn how to use the medication, give him a purpose. Just letting him round around the house would confuse the crap out of him, scary? Ye.
If you are at all interested in showing your son how to use the medication just send me an e-mail, i could probably offer you some techniques to cut back on the stresses of dealing with ADHD kid.
