Gizmo is sitting on the carpet weve had airing on the back deck for a week, Miss Margot is chasing fluff around the deck and being a crazy cat, first batch of waffles is on, and Katies coming over later to help motivate me to unpack. Sometime between now and her arrival I must pick off another song. Times a-wasting! At my age a year goes by like nothing!
On a completely different subject I have been thinking about the cultural reverber-erberations around Michael Jacksons unfortunate death. He was fifty and Im fifty and dont think I havent thought about what he did in his life and with it and what Ive done with mine. I am the tape measure for everything I perceive. I must make a big effort to see things otherwise.
If I was taking 10 Xanax every night, my brother would stage an intervention. It would take him a long time to work up to it, because hes a pretty laid back guy and doesnt stick his nose in other peoples biz without thinking about it in a considered way, but hed pick up the phone, call the kids and Paul, and get me to a doctor.
The saddest thing about Jacksons death is the extent to which it reveals how none of his friends thought enough of his one, single, precious life to make more than arm-wavy gestures about his drug use. One of his sisters tried, apparently, and one can only wonder at why she didnt pick up the phone and call the cops. He needed to be arrested for the godawful stew of illegally prescribed/obtained drugs he had in his house, and so did every person illegally prescribing and obtaining them on his behalf.
The best case scenario was a Robert Downey Jr. style self-reinvention as somebody who beat addiction and childhood trauma to head to the top of his game. It would have involved his handlers and psychic moneychangers getting their meretricious mitts away from him and into something resembling honest employment. The worst case scenario was dying like Elvis, which, according to published reports by Lisa Presley, he fully expected to happen. Kinda like Christ knowing he was going to get it; except in this case a willing offering on the pyre of celebrity.

The Fourth of July weekend is here and whether you’re planning a barbecue at a park, the beach or in your own backyard, don’t forget the sunblock. Sunblock is a major factor in protecting you from getting skin cancer from sun exposure. According to The Skin Cancer Foundation, “more than 90 percent of all skin cancers are caused by sun exposure and sunscreens are a key weapon in the arsenal against the disease.”
So, here are some of the answers to what people want to know about sunblock.
What makes the sun harmful?
There are two types of ultraviolet (UV) radiation that the sun emits. They are UVA and UVB rays. UVB rays are the rays that cause sunburn. UVA rays penetrate the skin more deeply and cause long-term damage, such as wrinkling, leathering, sagging, and other effects of aging.
What is the UV Index?
The UV Index provides a forecast for the risk of overexposure to the sun. Knowing the UV Index gives you an idea about the dangers of overexposure to the sun when you are working or playing outside. It is calculated on a daily basis by the National Weather Service and the Environmental Protection Agency. The measurement is based on the clouds and local conditions that will affect the amount of UV rays to hit the ground.
It ranges from zero to 10+. Zero implies a low risk of overexposure to the UV rays of the sun and 10+ is a very high risk of overexposure. For the average person, a UV Index of 3 to 5 is a moderate risk of overexposure to the sun
How can we protect ourselves from the harmful effects of sun?
o Limit your exposure to direct sun, i.e., spend time in the shade.
o Wear protective clothing if you’ll be in the sun for along periods of time, especially, a wide brim hat.
o Whether you’re in the direct sun or in the shade, use sunblock with a SPF of 15 or higher.
What is SPF?
SPF is an acronym for Sun Protection Factor. It is laboratory measurement of a sunscreen’s ability to filter the UVB rays to prevent sunburn. The higher the SPF, the more protection it provides against the sun. In other words, if you burn in eight minutes and you use a sunblock with a SPF of 10, it will take you 80 minutes to burn. If you use SPF 15, it will take 120 minutes for you to burn.
In reality, the protection provided depends on several factors: The person’s skin type, the amount applied and the frequency of application, activities that are engaged in while the product is on, and amount of sunscreen that is absorbed into the skin.
How should you apply sunblock?
Frequently and liberally! Despite the fact that it adds hours on to the time it takes for a person to burn, it is best to apply it at least every two hours. Apply it more frequently, if you are swimming or sweating. It should also be applied liberally one ounce per use. Therefore, if you buy an 8 ounce bottle, it should only last for 8 uses.
Which is the best number to get?
Anything above SPF 15 is best. SPF 15 will filter out 92 percent of the UVB rays, SPF 30 will filter out 97 percent of the rays and SPF 50 will filter out about 98 percent.
Whatever number you get, remember to apply it frequently and liberally!
What is the best kind to get?
It does not have to the most expensive one on the shelf to be the most effective. You should look for ones that filter the UVA and UVB rays. Look for ones that are waterproof or sweatproof. Needless to say, take waterproof and sweatproof with a grain of salt. If you go swimming for more than a quick dip and you’re sweating more than a droplet on your forehead, it’s not enough to apply it once. If you go swimming, apply it again when you come out of the water. If you’re sweating, apply it more frequently.
Are there clothes that have SPF?
A regular white T-shirt has an SPF of 3. There are clothes that are made with zinc oxide and can provide an SPF of 30. Tighter knit clothing also provides some protection. Always try to wear a wide-brim hat to give more protection too.
Am I protected from the UV rays in the shade?
The shade does provide some protection but the UV rays of the sun can reflect off the water, sand, concrete, and snow (not usually a problem in the summer!) and then penetrate the skin. So sitting in the shade does provide good protection, but you still need to apply sunscreen.
And remember, whether you’re walking on the beach or just sitting on the porch reading a book, it’s always a good idea to have a bottle of sunblock close by. It’s a key factor in reducing your risk of developing skin cancer.

What is Japanese Hair Straightening? Also referred to as thermal reconditioning, Japanese Hair Straightening is the method of treating hair with chemicals, separating it into sections, ironing the hair, rinsing it, then blow drying. By breaking the protein bonds in your hair, the chemicals in the Japanese Hair Straightening treatment are able to semi-permanently smooth out any frizz, waves, or curls. Once the Japanese Hair Straightening process is complete, the result is straight hair for four to six months.
How Long Does The Japanese Hair Straightening Process Take? Japanese Hair Straightening may take three to six hours to complete. Total time for the Japanese Hair Straightening process is dependent on the length of your hair, the health of your hair, and of course, the knowledge of your hair dresser.
What Does Japanese Hair Straightening Cost? The Japanese Hair Straightening treatment can cost between $300 to $1,500 depending on the salon at which you are treated. Costs vary based on a number of variants: the length of your hair, health of your hair, reputation of the salon, whether the Japanese Hair Straightening treatment is being performed by a specially trained hair dresser or not, and any additional or specialty products being used.
Is Anyone Qualified To Perform Japanese Hair Straightening? When booking a Japanese Hair Straightening treatment, ask the person who will be performing the treatment: what type of training they had, how long they have been performing the treatments, for one or two references that you can contact who have personally had the treatment done by the professional you are speaking to, and pictures of before and after shots from clients that have had the Japanese Hair Straightening treatment performed. Does the professional answer your questions quickly yet intelligently, sounding knowledgable about the process? Because Japanese Hair Straightening does require the use a number of chemicals that can damage your hair if applied incorrectly, its important to get as many facts and questions answered before the treatment is scheduled.
Is Japanese Hair Straightening Safe For My Hair? Japanese Hair Straightening is usually sought out by females with frizzy or curly hair that want straight, low-maintenance hair. However, if your hair has been recently colored, bleached, relaxed, or processed in any way, or if you have African hair, the Japanese Hair Straightening process is not safe for your hair. Since the Japanese Hair Straightening process uses a number of chemicals alongside a high temperature heating iron, hair that is susceptible to breakage does not make a great candidate. If you have any concerns about your current hair health, talk to a Japanese Hair Straightening specialist before booking any appointments.
What Should I Do After A Japanese Hair Straightening Treatment Is Performed? Once you leave the salon, you will be instructed to use a specialty conditioner to ensure that your hair stays straight and healthy. Most salons will be partial to a specific brand of conditioner that they recommend or carry, but a quality shampoo and conditioner will help you to maintain healthy hair. After the treatment is performed, you will also be instructed to wait one to two months before coloring or treating your hair in any way.

Help Fight Vitamin B12 Deficiency Anemia
* At least 3.4 million Americans have been diagnosed as anemic, and millions more may be undiagnosed or at increased risk of developing anemia. ~ National Anemia Action Council
What exactly is anemia?
Anemia is a condition in which your blood is low on healthy red blood cells. Without enough healthy red blood cells in circulation, your body cant get the oxygen it needs so you end up with symptoms like:
* Weakness
* Lightheadedness
* Decreased appetite
* Abdominal pain
* Fatigue
* Pale skin
* Weight loss
* Diarrhea
* Tingling and numbness in the hands and feet
What causes vitamin B12 deficiency anemia?
B12 deficiency anemia (Megaloblastic anemia) has a variety of causes:
* Pernicious anemia, an autoimmune disease that interferes with your stomachs ability to produce intrinsic factor, which must bind with vitamin B12 until it can be absorbed in the small intestine * Gastrectomy, gastric bypass surgery, or removal of the last portion of the small intestine where B12 is absorbed
* Digestive disorders such as bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine or parasitic infections
* A dietary lack of meat, eggs or dairy products the primary sources for vitamin B-12
* Crohns disease
* Pancreatic disorders
Why is B12 so important?
B12 is vitally necessary for the proper formation of red blood cells. Blood consists of a liquid called plasma and three types of blood cells:
* White blood cells that help fight infections
* Platelets that help your blood clot after a cut
* Red blood cells that carry oxygen from your lungs to your brain and other organs and tissues. Your body must have oxygenated blood to function it gives your body its energy
All three types of blood cells are produced by regular cell division in your bone marrow a red, spongy material located within the cavities of many of your large bones.
If your original cells have an inadequate supply of vitamin B12, your new red blood cells will be abnormally large and your white blood cells will have abnormal nuclei. Both will be destroyed more rapidly in the bone marrow and fewer will make it into your bloodstream, robbing your body of the oxygen it needs to function properly. Large, dense, oversized red blood cells (RBCs) are seen in vitamin B12 deficiency anemia.
Vitamin B12 deficiency anemia develops gradually, allowing the body to adapt so that the anemia may be more severe than the symptoms indicate. Left untreated, serious problems can occur in prolonged and severe anemia. Anemia can lead to secondary organ dysfunction or damage, including heart arrhythmia and congestive heart failure.
How is vitamin B12 deficiency anemia diagnosed and treated?
Many types of anemia exist, each with its own cause the cause may be an iron or vitamin deficiency, blood loss, a chronic illness, or a genetic or acquired defect or disease. It may also be a side effect of a medication, so its important that you work with your health care provider to confirm that you have anemia, which type of anemia it is, how severe it is and how to properly treat it.
Doctors diagnose vitamin B12 deficiency anemia through blood tests that measure the level and appearance of red blood cells. In vitamin deficiency anemia, youll not only have fewer red blood cells, but the red blood cells that you do have will be large and underdeveloped. In advanced deficiencies, white blood cells and platelets also look abnormal under a microscope.
Vitamin B12 deficiency anemia can often be successfully treated with supplements. However, in many cases, the anemia will reoccur if vitamin B12 supplementation is stopped. Anemia is a condition that can have serious consequences if left untreated but it is also a condition that can be readily managed by current therapies.
Whats the best way to get the B12 you need?
If your doctor has diagnosed you or you think you may be at risk for a vitamin B12 deficiency anemia, you need the safest, freshest and most effective B12 supplement available on the market today. In the past, B12 options have been limited to highly ineffective oral tablets or painful and expensive injections. Today, you can choose TriVita Super Sublingual B12.
The key is the TriVita original, patented sublingual delivery method: you put a great-tasting, quick-dissolving tablet under your tongue and the vitamins speed directly into your system. Once there, they can quickly go to work fighting the potentially devastating effects of anemia.

It is obvious that there are plenty of views of what is defined by success. However, it is important to recognize and comprehend what success means to YOU. It will make your journey to understand how to become successful much simpler.
How would YOU like to become successful?
Take some time, think hard and write down your list of how you want to become successful in life.
If you know what success is, why have you not become successful yet? Yes, this is a very sensitive issue, and at times it hurts to face it. Why are certain people successful and others not? Is it something in our make-up; something in our genes that prevent us from excelling in life? Or is it something that we can change and turn around? Is it simply because you do not know how to become successful?
It is true that certain aspects of our lives can't be changed and some aspects are awfully hard to modify. A person may have been born with specific disabilities that make it impossible to carry out certain actions. For example, although there are many blind people who can do amazing things without their eyesight, there are some actions and occupations where there is no substitute for proper vision, such as being a fighter aircraft pilot.
Furthermore, a person may not have the talent to execute certain tasks well, although lack of talent did not prevent many persons to become successful. For example, there are a few international pop stars who do not have exceptional singing voices, but they make up for that deficiency in other areas, such as with amazing songs, on-stage presence, on-stage gimmicks, brilliant marketing, etc.
Excuses
Most people in the world quote lack of MONEY as their number one excuse for not being successful. Nevertheless, entrepreneurs like Honda's founder, Soichiro Honda, Sony Corporation's founder, Akio Morita and even Apple's founder, Steve Jobs, have proven them wrong.
TIME is the next most universal resource that people say they are short of for not becoming successful. However, all of us operate by the same clock; and all of us have the same 24 hours in every day. Consequently, everyone must possess the ability to plan and manage how we utilize time that either produces results, or lack of results.
Then there are persons who state that they do not have the TALENT or the ABILITY to become successful. Two South African Paralympic athletes have proven them wrong. Oscar Pistorius and Natalie du Toit are both disabled athletes who regularly compete against able-bodied athletes.
Oscar Pistorius is known as the "Blade Runner" and "the fastest man on no legs". Oscar is the double amputee world record holder in the 100, 200 and 400 metres (sport class T44) events and runs with the aid of Flex-Foot carbon fibre transtibial artificial limbs. In 2007 Oscar took part in his first international able-bodied competitions. At the 2008 Summer Paralympics, he took the gold medals in the 100, 200 and 400 metres (T44) sprints.
Natalie du Toit is a South African swimmer whose left leg was amputated at the knee after a motorcycle accident. When she qualified to compete at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, she became the first female amputee swimmer ever to qualify for the Olympics, where she placed 16th in a field of 24 in the 10,000m swim. She also took part in the 2008 Summer Paralympics, winning 5 Gold Medals.
And so there are numerous of other excuses that people mention for not becoming successful.
